On September 17th, a new law in Maine came for hands-free driving, and now 48 US states have adopted the new law as of October 2019. With powerful technology in your pocket, it's surprising that not a lot of people know how to truly go hands-free. Let us help!
How to Start or Retrain Siri's voice activation "Hey Siri"
Not a lot of people know this about iPhone but you can pretty much do anything you normally would be able to do but by voice. Including texting. Once fully enabled you can simply say "Hey Siri" and she will ask for your next command.
To Enable or retrain:
1. Open Settings on your iPhone
2. Select Siri & Search (Look for the toggle switch for “Hey Siri” and turn it off)
3. Turn it back on again
Your iPhone will ask you to train Siri to recognize your voice. Tap continue and follow the steps on the screen. You may be asked to say "Hey Siri" or other prompts several times.
How to use CarPlay with your iPhone
CarPlay takes the things that you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them on your car's built-in display. When you connect your iPhone to CarPlay, you can get turn-by-turn directions, make calls, send and receive messages, listen to music, and more. CarPlay uses the contacts on your iPhone to help you make calls, send texts, and find destinations.
CarPlay uses Siri Voice Control, so you can ask for what you want while you're driving — allowing you to stay focused on the road. CarPlay even works with the built-in controls in your car — like a touchscreen, knob, or button.
Set up CarPlay
Follow these steps to get started:
Make sure that you're in an area that supports CarPlay and that your car supports CarPlay.Start your car, then make sure that Siri is on.Connect your iPhone to your car:If your car supports CarPlay via USB cable, plug your iPhone into the USB port in your car. The USB port might be labeled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon.If your car supports wireless CarPlay, press and hold the voice-command button on your steering wheel. Make sure that your stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap Available cars, then select your car. Check your car manual for more information.
Use Siri with CarPlay
If your vehicle supports CarPlay or Siri Eyes Free, hold down the voice-command button on your steering wheel while you say what you need. If you aren't sure where the voice-command button is, check the manual for your car or stereo.
Much like Siri, most Android devices have "OK Google" build right into the OS. Even Samsung, which already has a built in AI called Bixby. If you have a Samsung I would personally recommend using it's proprietary "Bixby" because OK google can do a lot, but Bixby has more flexibility.
To activate simply say "OK Google" into your phone on the home screen. One of 2 things will happen...
1. Google assistant will pop up and give you options to learn voice or customize your user settings:
This means it was already active and all you need to do now is train it by talking to it frequently. You can say things like "OK Google: Text my Dad...Say I will be there in about 15 minutes" - and it will preform the task for you hands free!
2. Nothing Happens:
It's okay, it just means you have never activated it before or you might have disabled some of its settings.
It would be unethical of us not to include Bixby in this lineup. Unfortunately it is pretty decent as a voice assistant, but it's almost equally as irritating because of its monitoring and constant notifications on the OS. However, it must be talked about!
You can access the Bixby screen by hitting the dedicated Bixby button on the side of your phone, or by swiping right (kek) on your home screen:
1. From the Bixby screen, tap the Settings icon .
2. Tap the On switch to enable the Bixby key functionality. Alternatively, navigate: Menu icon > Settings > Bixby key then tap Press to open Bixby Home. Press and hold to open Bixby Voice.
Once activated, you can use Bixby by saying "Hey Bixby" or pressing the dedicated Bixby button
